Is it true that there is a difference between new construction and replacement windows? What exactly are the primary differences?
Have you ever noticed that new construction (also known as full frame) and replacement (also known as retrofit) windows are different? These are the primary varieties for the construction industry. Are replacement products always superior to new windows?
New Construction Full Frame
If your house is part of a large development, then you can expect the fixtures to be purchased en masse. The builder might actually receive a discount by purchasing numerous fixtures at the same time. Generally, your new windows and doors are likely to be cheaper than replacement varieties. New construction varieties will be nailed directly to the full frame. These might be added before the outside or inside is painted. Generally, the full frame options will be more secure. You can expect vinyl and aluminum windows to last between 20 and 40 years with normal use. Double-pane steel windows might last between 8 and 20 years, depending on whether moisture gets inside.
A new construction window is installed before your interior furnishings are placed in the home. Therefore, if you have a fully functional home with furniture, carpet and so forth, it is preferable to go with the replacement variety. The replacement fixtures are likely to be set within your original frame. This ensures that your wall, siding or interior trim is not disturbed, too much. The retrofit is less invasive. So, one of the determining factors is whether you want to replace the frame and casing or not. If you are happy with your frame, but merely want to upgrade to steel windows or some other variety, then the replacement path might be better.
